The weather had been "iffy" all week long, but Saturday turned out perfect for Opening Night for the 2003 Racing Season at Spoon River Speedway. This year's venue is much like last year's, and we had 72 cars on hand for tonight's races. E-Mod's, Modifieds, Thunder Trucks, Late Models, Pro Streets, and Hobos make up the various divisions for each night's races. One change that you will notice this year is the way they are lining the cars up for the heat races. Just like in the special shows, (USMTS, UMP, Fall Nationals, etc.) each class will be lining up in a staging area in the upper pits BEFORE they came out onto the track. Not only did everything seem a lot more organized, but it also saved a considerable amount of time. HATS OFF to track promoter Morey Denney for deciding to implement the idea!

The night started out with the E-Mod Heat Races. In the 1st heat, the #M3 of Chuck McDonald moved into the lead on lap #2 and stayed out front for the win, and the #96 of Kirk Anderson drove his way to a 2nd place finish from deep in the field. The #4 of John Winters started out front in E-Mod Heat #2, opened up a big lead, and took home the checkered flag, followed by the #3M of Chris McMahill in 2nd.

The #31 of Mark Anderson jumped out to a quick lead in Modified Heat #1, but a lap #5 caution put the #C40 of Mike Chasteen on his back bumper. Chasteen made a nice last lap pass to score the win, but was later disqualified, his car being found illegal during post-race inspection. Anderson was given the win, moving the #25 of Butch Weisser into 2nd. The #96 of Kirk Anderson led the entire race in Modified Heat #2, until the last turn, when he spun coming out of turn #4, and the #28 of Jim Hibser, who was running in 2nd, was forced to get out of the gas to avoid a major collision. The #M21 of Justin Munson and the #48 of Casey Lappin were able to capitalize and quickly moved into the #1 and #2 spots just in time to take the checkered flag. The #1 of Floyd Jordan jumped out front early in Modified Heat #3, and he stayed out front all the way to the end, followed closely by the #M1 of Dale Munson in 2nd.

The #88 of Dave Collins scored a very convincing win in the thunder Truck Heat Race, followed by the #31 of Harry Fourdyce in 2nd.

The #11 of Brad Denney also scored a very convincing win in Late Model Heat #1, with a half a straightaway lead over the 2nd place car, the #B12 of Roger Nelson. The #10M of Chad Pratt quickly moved out front in Late Model Heat #2, and stayed out front to score the win, with the #88 of Rob Bauman finishing in 2nd.

The #81 of Mark Ross scored a strong win in the Pro Street Heat Race, with the #18 of Terry Pratt finishing in 2nd.

The #19 of Durland Pople was out front all the way from start to finish in the Hobo Heat Race, with the #68 Lance Alcorn finishing a strong 2nd.

After a short intermission, we moved on to the Feature Events. The #3M of Chris McMahill started on the pole in the E-Mod Main Event, but the #96 of Kirk Anderson moved into the lead on the 1st lap, bringing the #M3 of Chuck McDonald along with him into 2nd. McMahill and the #M17 of Brent Munson battled side by side for the 3rd spot, with the #4 of John Winters right behind them in 5th. Caution came out on lap #3 when Munson slowed coming out of turn #4, something obviously going away on his car. Several more cautions came out for cars spinning and colliding towards the back of the pack, but by a lap #5 restart, the #28 of Phil Schnarr, who started way back in the 8th spot, had made his way through traffic and into the 3rd spot. The #29 of Chad Terwillger and the #7W of Mark Branch both started deep in the field also, but they were also moving through traffic and towards the front of the pack by lap #7. There was A LOT of bumping and grinding throughout the entire race, but it all came to a crashing halt on the front stretch after the white flag came out. Terwillger got a run out ofturn #4 and made his way around Schnarr, setting his sights on McMahill. Contact between the cars set off a chain reaction that ended up with McMahill, Branch, and the #5 of Jake Helfers all torn up on the front stretch, and Terwillger went to the pits with a flat tire. McMahill suffered the worst of the damage, and the ambulance was called to the track. After a while, McMahill was able to climb from his car, obviously sore from the very hard impact, but his car was mangled pretty badly and was not able to continue. After the front stretch was cleared, the field was shown the green and white, leaving a one-lap shoot-out to the finish. Kirk Anderson got a good jump on the restart and was able to keep his #96 E-Mod out front to take home the checkered flag. The #M3 of Chuck McDonald finished in 2nd, followed by the #28 of Phil Schnarr in 3rd, the #27W of Greg Ward in 4th, and the #7W of Mark Branch in 5th.

Our best wishes to Chris McMahill after a VERY HARD front-stretch crash. We sure hope he's OK and back racing with us again next week!!!

Next on the agenda was the Modified Feature. The #M1 of Dale Munson started on the pole and stayed out front until lap #7, when he lost a gear coming out of turn #4, slowed way down, and bottled up the entire field behind him. Everyone did a nice job avoiding the #M1 car, and the #25 of Butch Weisser jumped out front and quickly opened up a nice lead for himself. The #1 of Floyd Jordan, the #48 of Casey Lappin, and the #31 of Mark Anderson were racing each other hard for the 2nd spot, with the #28 of Jim Hibser and the #64 of Gary Cook, Jr. right behind them fighting for the 5th spot. Caution came out again on lap #14, cutting down the lead Weisser had opened up for himself. The field was bunched back up again, making it a 5-way fight for the lead on the restart. Butch Weisser outraced the competition and kept his #25 Modified out in front of the rest of the field to score his first Feature win of the season. The #31 of Mark Anderson raced his way to a 2nd place finish, followed by the #48 of Casey Lappin in 3rd, the #28 of Jim Hibser in 4th, and the #64 of Gary Cook, Jr. in 5th.

The Thunder Truck Feature started with almost four-wide, side by side racing going into turn #1, but the #8 of Dave Collins moved into the lead on the back stretch, and had no trouble staying out front until he end. Collins opened up a BIG lead, and from lap #5 until the end, the trucks were single file all the way around the race track. The Thunder Truck Feature WAS the most "caution free" event of the night, with good solid laps by all the competitors. The #8 of Dave Collins scored a convincing win, followed by the #26 of Ryan Wilson in 2nd, the #29 of David Boyer in 3rd, the #88 of Dave Collins in 4th, and the #31 of Harry Fourdyce in 5th.

The #59 of Morey Denney started on the pole and led the first lap of the Late Model feature, but by lap #2, the #29J of Lindell Jewell took over the lead. Jewell wasn't alone long up front, though. By lap #6, the #11 of Brad Denney, who started back in the 7th spot, had made his way to the front and was challenging for the lead. Brad Denney got under Jewell to take the lead on lap #7, and quickly opened up some breathing room between himself and the rest of the field. Jewell ran most of the race alone in the 2nd spot, but there was a lot of side-by-side racing going on for the 3rd spot between the #59 of Denney and the #B12 of Roger Nelson, and the #12 of Floyd Jordan, Jr. and the #10M of Chad Pratt were battling each other for the 5th spot. Lap traffic came into play for the race leaders on lap #15, but it didn't seem to slow them down at all. However, a caution flag did slow them down on lap #19, bunched the field back up again, and turned the race into another 1 lap shoot-out. Brad Denney got a good jump on the restart, and he kept the #11 out in front of the rest of the field to score the Feature win. The #10M of Chad Pratt also had a good restart, getting around Jewell and coming home in the 2nd spot. The #29J of Lindell Jewell finished in 3rd, followed by the #12 of Floyd Jordan, Jr. in 4th, and the #3G of Bob Goodin in 5th.

The #12 of Tom Turnbull started 3rd in the Pro Street Feature, but by turn #1 he was up into the 2nd spot, and by the time he reached the start/finish line he was challenging the #5 of Deric Sweitzer for the lead. Another car on the move was the #18 of Terry Pratt. Pratt started in 4th, but by lap #4 was up into the 2nd spot. The #81K of Mark Ross wasn't wasting any time either. Ross, who started 5th, had raced his way into the 3rd spot by a lap #6 caution. Ross got a GREAT jump on the restart to move into the 2nd spot, and quickly set his sights on Turnbull, the race leader. Ross got a good run in turns #1 and #2 on the last lap, an was able to get his nose out front coming down the backstretch. Mark Ross was able to hold off the competition, and took his #81K Pro Street to victory lane. The #12 of Tom Turnbull finished with a strong 2nd, followed by the #18 of Terry Pratt in 3rd, the #5 of Deric Sweitzer in 4th, and the #M18 of Clayton Murphy in 5th.

The #68 of Lance Alcorn lined up in the 2nd spot to start the Hobo feature, but he didn't stay there for very long! Alcorn got around the pole sitter, the #42 of Tim Bishop, in a hurry, and quickly opened up a nice lead for himself on the first lap. The #64 of Curtis Link, who started back in 6th, and the #35 of Josh Smith, who started in 5th, quickly moved their way up front and into a 2nd place battle with Bishop. Another car moving up in a hurry was the #11 of Scott Denney. Denney, who started at the very back of the field in the 9th spot, was up battling for the 4th spot with the #19 of Durland Pople by lap #8. Alcorn got another good restart after a lap #8 caution, leaving Bishop and Smith battling side by side for the 2nd spot. Lance Alcorn easily kept his #68 Hobo out front to score a very convincing Feature win. The #35 of Josh Smith held off the competition and finished in 2nd. The #11 of Scott Denney made a nice last-turn pass to finish in the 3rd spot, followed by the #42 of Tim Bishop in 4th, and the #64 of Curtis Link in 5th.
