Notice to all Drivers and Pit Crews !

New for the Spoon River Speedway Web site is the Drivers Profiles pages. We need information on the Drivers and their Pit Crew. If you can send in a photo, that would be a plus. The Webmaster is charging Morey $2.00 per page so lets see how big a bill we can ring up for Morey. Send your photo and information to
Webmaster @ Spoon.
I hope to see all the Drivers photos and their history on the Web site.

Mother Nature smiled on us once again, and we had another beautiful evening for racing. Tonight's race was the Tuff Spoon 100. There were NO heat races tonight, ONLY Feature events. The Modifieds and the Late Models were both scheduled to run 100 lap Features, with the E-Mods and Pro-Streets each running 30 lap Features, and the Hobos and Thunder Trucks each running 20 lap Features. All races were split into two segments, in other words, the Mods would run two 50 lap segments, the E-Mods would run two 15 lap segments, etc. It was certain to be a late night (we're used to that at Spoon) but with a total of 300 LAPS OF FEATURE RACING, it was sure to be an exciting night!! This race is called the Tuff Spoon because it is just that …….. TOUGH! It's tough on the drivers, and it's even tougher on the cars, but it's a GREAT accomplishment for those who are fortunate enough to survive until the end!

The #7W of Mark Branch started in 4th in E-Mod Segment #1, but he jumped out front on the first lap, and quickly opened up a nice lead, with the #5 of Jake Helfers and the #85E of Oscar Everett racing behind him for 2nd and 3rd. The #96 of Kirk Anderson didn't waste any time moving towards the front of the field. Anderson, who started way back in 13th, was up to 4th by lap #5, and up to 2nd by lap #10. While Anderson was having a great run, it wasn't going as well for many of the other top E-Mod drivers. Both Bauman cars were involved in a caution on the start and had to take their cars to the pits. Sr. & Jr. both made it back out, but had more trouble later in the race, forcing them to both pull into the pits again. Another front runner, the #M17 of Brent Munson, had clutch trouble early in the race and had to pull off the track, and the #25 of Phil Schnarr pulled off on lap #13 with engine problems. Caution came out on lap #10, closing the gap between himself and Branch, and Anderson was able to take advantage and move into the lead on the restart. Kirk Anderson stayed out front and finished the first segment in the lead. Mark Branch finished the segment in 2nd, followed by Oscar Everett in 3rd, the #4 of John Winters in 4th, and the #M3 of Chuck McDonald in 5th.

Cross Flag The driver of the #13 E-Mod, Terry Miller, was one of the drivers that we had a chance to talk with tonight. Terry races with us Rantoul, Illinois. Terry's pit crewmembers include Chad Miller and Greg Norman, and the team would like to let everyone know that "Sponsors ARE Needed!!" Terry says his biggest fan is his daughter. When we asked Terry how his car was running, his answer was "Good". Terry's goal for the night was to run the whole Feature, but he was one of many that fell victim to the "Tuff Spoon" tonight. The driver that Terry looks up to the most is Dale Earnhardt, because Dale was always a TUFF driver! What does Terry like the most about Spoon River Speedway? It's FAST and it's WIDE! The least? They run too few cars in some of the heat races. Our thanks to Terry for taking the time to talk with us this evening, and we certainly hope to see more of him next season.

The #88 of Steve David and the #420 of John Eppers started on the front row in Modified Segment #1, but 50 laps is a long way to go, and there were 19 more cars behind them all wanting to come to the front! David and Eppers opened up some breathing room between themselves and the rest of the field, but caution bunched the field back up again on lap #8. The #22B of Richie Biswell, who started back in 7th, had quickly moved up to 3rd, and by lap #10, he got around David and Eppers and took over the lead. Several other cars were moving up fast, too. The #12 of Eddie Bolander, who started in 17th, and the #28 of Phil Schnarr, who started 10th, were both up in the top 5 by lap #14. The #26 of JD Beal, the #17 of Rick Scott, the #25 of Butch Weisser, and the #34 of Bill Anderson were also moving up into the top 10 in a hurry. #17 didn't seem to be so lucky for Scott tonight, as he had to pull into the pits on lap #17 with a flat tire, but it was definitely too early in the race to count him out! There was door-to-door and side-by-side racing going on ALL OVER the track, with everyone still on the lead lap and racing for position. JD Beal made a nice move around Schnarr and Biswell and moved into the lead on lap #35. Beal stayed out front until lap #41, when Bolander was able to get under him and take away the front spot. The #12 of Eddie Bolander stayed out front and finished the first segment in the lead. The #17 of Rick Scott, Jr., who pulled into the pits on lap #17 with a flat tire, raced his way all the way back up to finish the segment in 2nd place. The #26 of JD Beal came across the start/finish line in 3rd, followed by the #28 of Phil Schnarr in 4th, and the #22B of Richie Biswell in 5th.

Cross Flag The driver of the #13 Modified, Keith Wilson, was another one of the drivers that we had a chance to talk with this evening. Keith races with us from Petersburg, Illinois. His pit crew is made up of himself and Perry Wilson, and Wilson Septic and Dixon's Heating and Air sponsor his car. Keith says his biggest fans are his wife and his Mom. When we asked Keith how his car was running, his answer was "Fair" Keith's goal for the season is to win a Feature event. The driver that Keith looks up to the most is Ken Schrader, because Ken is a friendly driver. What does Keith like the most about Spoon River Speedway? The high banks. The least? How long it takes to get the races finished. Our thanks to Keith for visiting with us tonight, and we hope to see him more often at Spoon River Speedway next season!

Twelve cars originally lined up for the start of Hobo Segment #1, but there were SEVERAL cautions right from the start, and ONLY 8 cars were left before they even scored a single lap! The #64 of Curtis Link jumped to an early lead on the 1st lap, but the #22 of Greg Sullivan was ALL OVER his back bumper. The #77 of Cliff Howard, who started all the way back 11th, was also moving up in a hurry. He was in the top 3 by lap #1, and he was under Sullivan on the backstretch and into the lead by lap #4. Another car on the move was the #8 of Eric Wisher. Wisher started 10th, but he was challenging Link for 3rd on a lap #5 restart. The #77 Cliff Howard opened up a BIG lead, and easily finished up front in the first segment. The #8 of Eric Wisher finished in 2nd, followed by the #22 of Greg Sullivan in 3rd, the #64 of Curtis Link in 4th, and the #19 of Durland Pople in 5th.

The #6 of Scott Wallace started on the pole in Pro Street Segment #1, and Wallace led the race all the way to lap #7. The #27C of Jim Carter, who started way back in the 9th spot, was moving up in a hurry. By lap #5, Carter was up to 2nd, but he was sent to the back of the pack on lap #7 for getting into the back of Wallace. Something obviously went away on Wallace's car, forcing him to take it to the pits, handing the lead over to the #18 of Terry Pratt. Carter may have restarted lap #7 in the back, but by lap #10, he was back up to 3rd and challenging the #31 of Pat Knox for the 2nd spot. Carter got around Knox, and set his sights on the race leader. By lap #12 Pratt and Carter were battling for the lead, but Terry Pratt was able to hold off the challenge and finish up front in segment #1. Jim Carter finished the segment in 2nd, followed by Pat Knox in 3rd, the #81K of Mark Ross in 4th, and the #5 of David Harris in 5th.

The #5F of Stan Fanning started on the pole in Late Model Segment #1, but the #M40 of Scott May, who started back in 7th, was ALL OVER his back bumper on the first lap! A couple of others cars that moved into the top 5 in a hurry were the #11 of Brad Denney, the #29J of Lindy Jewell, and the #10M of Chad Pratt. May got around Fanning and moved into the lead on lap #3, and Pratt was also able to get around hum and into 2nd by lap #7. A little further back in traffic, a great battle for the 7th spot was going on between the #59 of Morey Denney and the #14 of Brent Nelson. Jewell got sent to the rear after caution came out on lap #15, but he got a GREAT start on the restart and was back up into the 5th spot by lap #16, and into 3rd by lap #17. By lap #24 the field was pretty spread out, with lap traffic coming into the picture for the race leaders. Pratt did a nice job making his way through traffic, and moved into the 4th spot, with the #58 of Virgil Nussell right behind him in 5th. Chaos erupted with only 2 laps to go when a multi-car accident happened on the front stretch. Brad Denney, who was running in 2nd, got caught up in the incident. Also involved was Morey Denney, who suffered considerable front end damage, and Lindell Jewell, who took a HARD hit that caused SEVERE damage. Both Denney cars were able to continue, but Jewell wasn't as lucky, leaving on a hook while running in 3rd. The #M40 of Scott May got a good jump on the restart and finished the first segment in the lead. The #11 of Brad Denney finished the segment in 2nd, followed by the #58 of Virgil Nussell in 3rd.

The #23 of Mike Weatherby started on the pole in Thunder Truck Segment #1, but he had LOTS of company from the #41 of Tom Wirebaugh and the #55 of Roger Nelson, all battling for the lead right from the very start! The #28 of Ron Wilson wasn't wasting any time moving towards the front, coming from a 9th place start up to the top 5 by the 2nd lap, but unfortunately something went away on his truck a few laps later, sending the #28 truck to the pits. As expected, the #30 of Gerald Carter quickly joined in the mix, also moving into the top 5 by lap #5. Nelson was able to get around Weatherby and moved into the lead on lap #4, bringing the #26 of Ryan Wilson along with him into 2nd. Another truck on the move was the #8 of Dave Collins. Collins started in 8th, but was up to 3rd by lap #6. Nelson opened up a BIG lead with all the racing for position going on behind him, and Roger Nelson finished the first segment with a nice lead. The #8 of Dave Collins finished the segment in 2nd, followed by Gerald Carter in 3rd, Ryan Wilson in 4th, and the #88 of Dave Collins in 5th.

After a short intermission, it was time to start Segment #2 for all classes. Keep in mind this is all one race, and segment #2 is a continuation of the first segment, so they lined them up just the way they finished after the first segment, and we started the 2nd half of each race with laps already on the scoreboard. Like I said earlier, JUST finishing the Tuff Spoon can be a GREAT accomplishment. Congratulations to all the "SURVIVORS"!

The #96 of Kirk Anderson started in the front in E-Mod Segment #2, and that's exactly where he stayed until the checkered flag waved! There was A LOT of racing for position going on behind the leader though. The #4 of John Winters was moving up in a hurry, and so were the #94 of Bobby Schnarr and the #64 of Jim Picardi. Winters quickly moved into the 2nd spot, with the #7W of Mark Branch right behind him in 3rd. Anderson and Winters broke away from the rest of the field by lap #19, leaving Schnarr and Picardi to battle it out for the 3rd spot. Kirk Anderson kept the #96 car out front until the end, and brought home the Feature win. The #4 of John Winters finished in 2nd, followed by the #64 of Jim Picardi in 3rd, the #94 of Bobby Schnarr in 4th, and the #M3 of Chuck McDonald in 5th.

Cross Flag The driver of the #30 E-Mod, Rob Bauman, Jr., was another one of the drivers that we talked with tonight. Rob races with us from Fairview, Illinois, and he has been consistently racing in the Top Ten, if not the Top Five, all season long! Rob's pit crew members include Willie Bauman, Jake Watson, and his Dad, who is also some of his biggest competition, Rob Bauman, Sr. Rob's car is sponsored by Butcher Block Meats and Home City Ice. Rob says his biggest fans are his family - they All support him every step of the way! When we asked Rob how his car was running, he answered, "It could be better". Rob had trouble early in tonight's race, but he was able to come back and he still managed a Top Ten finish. Rob's goals are simple - win Features!! The driver that Robbie looks up to the most is his Dad, Rob Bauman, Sr., because Rob is always a clean and consistent driver. What does Robbie like the most about Spoon River Speedway? It's WIDE and it's FAST!! The least? The time - it's WAY late by the time we get out of here! Robbie wanted to thank the Promotes for such a GREAT track, and he also wanted to thank the fans that support him week after week. Also, a very special "THANK YOU" to his Grandparents for their help on parts! Our thanks to Robbie for taking the time to talk with us tonight. We've enjoyed watching him race up front all season, and we look forward to seeing him up front even more in the future!

The #17 of Rick Scott, Jr. started 2nd in Modified Segment #2, but he got around the #12 of Eddie Bolander in the first few laps, and Scott kept the #17 car out front all the way to the checkered flag, some 48 laps later! Caution came out SEVERAL times throughout the race, but it didn't seem to affect Rick Scott. He got a great jump restart after restart, and every time he quickly opened up a nice lead for himself. Twenty-one cars started the race, but attrition was high, and by lap #68 there were only fourteen left on the track. The #26 of JD Beal started challenging Bolander for the 2nd spot around lap #70, and they traded the spot back and forth a couple of time, but by lap #80, Beal finally took control of 2nd, and he also "checked out" on the rest of the competition. The #22B of Richie Biswell soon came into the picture, challenging Bolander for 3rd, with the #C40 of Floyd Jordan, Jr. running in 5th right behind them. By this time, Rick Scott, Jr. had opened up a HUGE lead, and he scored a VERY convincing Tuff Spoon Feature win. The #26 of JD Beal scored a VERY strong 2nd, crossing the finish line with no one anywhere near him. The #12 of Eddie Bolander finished in 3rd, followed by the #22B of Richie Biswell in 4th, and the #C40 of Floyd Jordan, Jr. in 5th. Congratulations to ALL the survivors of the 100 lap feature - it was sure a TUFF one!!!

The track was definitely getting "slick" after 100 laps of Modified racing, so the Thunder Truck drivers would probably have their hands full just keeping their trucks on the "straight and narrow"! The #8 of Dave Collins didn't seem to notice the slick conditions, though. There was a LOT of smoke coming from his truck from the very beginning of the race, but that didn't stop Collins from moving into an early lead on lap #13. The #55 of Roger Nelson ran the entire race in 2nd, followed by the #30 of Gerald Carter in 3rd. Collins and Nelson opened up a BIG lead on the rest of the field, and Carter ran the race ALL alone in the 3rd spot, with the #28 of Ron Wilson and the #26 of Ryan Wilson quite a way behind him in 4th and 5th. Dave Collins stayed out front all the way to the checkered flag, and the #8's engine held on JUST long enough to take home the Feature win. The #55 of Roger Nelson finished in 2nd, followed by the #30 Gerald Carter in 3rd, the #28 of Ron Wilson in 4th, and the #26 of Ryan Wilson in 5th.

Tonight's BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE needs to go to the Scorekeepers in the booth! There were so many cars lapping other cars in the 2nd Late Model Segment, that it was VERY hard to tell who was running in what position! The #M40 of Scott "Scooter" May started on the pole, with the #11 of Brad Denney and the #58 of Virgil Nussell right behind him. Denney got around May and moved into the lead early in the race, but May got into the back bumper of Denney, causing him to spin. Denney was forced to take his car to the pits with a flat tire, so both Brad and Scott had to restart from the back of the field, handing the lead over to Virgil. As one would expect, neither Brad nor Scott were content with being in the back, and they both took their cars back towards the front in a hurry, gaining SEVERAL spots on the restart alone. May, Denney, and Nussell were the only 3 cars on the lead lap, but they all had A LOT of lap traffic to contend with while racing for position. May moved back into the lead on lap #62, with Denney right behind him in 2nd. The engine let loose on the #58 car on lap #82, sending Nussell to the pits and ending his chance at a victory. May was able to put a little "breathing room" between himself and Denney, but on lap #89, May was forced to pull into the pits with a flat tire, putting Brad out front once again. May quickly made the tire change and got his car back out on the track, but he had a lot of ground to make up, and only 10 laps to do it! Brad Denney kept the #11 out front for the Feature win, and the #M40 of Scott "Scooter" May finished in 2nd. My apologies to the other drivers, but I couldn't tell who finished where after that, with different cars on different laps! I do know that the #59 of Morey Denney ran a GREAT race, as did the #10M of Chad Pratt and the #14 of Brent Nelson. Once again, "Congratulations" to ALL the "Survivors" - the race certainly lived up to its TUFF name!!

The track may have been "slick" for the truck race, but it looked like an ice skating rink by the time the Pro Street cars came out for the 2nd segment of their race. The #27C of Jim Carter may have lined up in 2nd in Segment #2, but he got around the #18 of Terry Pratt and moved into the lead in the first turn. The #81K of Mark Ross was also moving up in a hurry, challenging Pratt for the 2nd spot by lap #18. The #27 of Greg Arnett moved quickly into the picture also, battling with the #31 of Pat Knox for the 4th spot. With all the racing for position going on behind him, Carter was able to open up a NICE lead for himself. Jim Carter had no problem keeping the #27C car out front all the way to the end, and he scored the Feature win. The #81K of Mark Ross finished in 2nd, followed by the #18 of Terry Pratt, the #27 of Greg Arnett, and the #31 of Pat Knox.

The #77 of Cliff Howard started on the pole in Hobo Segment #2, and he stayed out front all the way to the checkered flag. The #8 of Eric Wisher challenged Howard for the lead a couple of times, but he couldn't get around. The #64 of Curtis Link got around the #22 of Greg Sullivan early in the race and moved into the 3rd spot, and they pretty much raced "single file" from there. The #77 of Cliff Howard brought home another Feature win, followed by the #8 of Eric Wisher, the #64 of Curtis Link, the #22 of Greg Sullivan, and the #19 of Durland Pople.

Cross Flag The driver of the #19 Hobo, Durland Pople, was also one of the drivers that we caught up with tonight. Durland races with us from Peoria, Illinois, and he's been in the Top five most of the season. Durland and Jun do all the work on the car themselves, and Snap-On, Big A, and Total House Cleaning sponsor his car. Durland says his biggest fans are Gordon & Harvick!!! When we asked Durland how his car was running, his answer was "Not as good as I'd like it to be". It looked REAL good in the Feature Durland, finishing in the 5th spot! Durland's goal for the season is to win a feature, and when he gets the car dialed in, I think he'll do just that! The driver that Durland looks up to the most is Phil Schnarr, because Phil drives his buddy's car. What does Durland like the most about Spoon River Speedway? The size, the banking, and especially the competition! The least/ The speakers! Our thanks to Durland for taking the time to talk with us this evening. We wish Durland the best of luck the rest of the season, and we'll be looking forward to seeing him in victory lane real soon!

Once again, a big "THANK YOU" tonight to
Rob Bauman, Jr., Terry Miller, Keith Wilson, and Durland Pople
for taking the time out of their busy night to talk to us. We'd like to wish them all a very safe & successful racing season.
